To me, nothing says spring like the official proclamation of April 22nd, Earth Day. I’m a big fan of saving time, energy and especially our environment. Not one to sit on the sidelines, I intend to actually participate in some type of Earth Day event here in the Northern Virginia/Maryland area and if you dig into the topic, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get involved yourself. Here are just a few suggestions:
- Green Drinks
Wednesday, April 22
Make Earth Day count by rallying to support the Chesapeake Bay at one of the areas Green Drinks spots throughout Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. “Green Drinks has come up with a unique way to make Earth Day really count for the Chesapeake Bay and have fun at the same time,” said William C. Baker, president of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

- Label the Watershed
Saturday, April 25 or Sunday, April 26
Sponsored by the Little Falls Watershed Alliance, the organization is looking for teams of volunteers from all throughout Montgom to go out and label the storm drains with "Don't Dump, Flow to Little Falls Watershed" stickers and to distribute educational material to neighbors.

- Alexandria Earth Day, Ben Brenman Park, Alexandria, VA
Saturday, April 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Schedule includes tree and compost bin sale (for less than the retail price) and a presentation for children on the value of good nutrition and exercise.

It’s Earth Day. Embrace it. Even if it means grabbing your kids and picking up garbage around your neighborhood, having your family walk or ride bikes for the day rather than using the car or actually remembering for one day to take your green reusable grocery bag to the store rather than bringing home the paper or plastic. Take some time to discover the differences you can make locally.
I’m interested, what are you planning for Earth Day activities?
